There are so many Bible stories that I really like to read.
So many stories that bring my heart joy and fulfill many needs.
Like the story of Peter and the disciples on their ship in the midst of the
sea.
They were tossed with waves and the wind was strong, harsh and contrary.
Then Jesus came walking on the water like a spirit and they all cried out in
fear.
But Jesus spoke unto them saying, "Be not afraid, it is I, be of good cheer."
When Peter saw Jesus he cried out, "Oh Lord, can I come meet Thee?"
And Jesus bid him forward saying, "Yes, come unto me."
So Peter stepped out of the boat and started walking on the water, you see.
But then into the water he fell crying, "Lord, Lord, please save me."
Saddened, Christ replied, "Oh ye of little faith, wherefore didst thou
doubt?"
And then He reached forth His mighty hand and pulled him safely out.
Now, was Christ just talking to Peter who tried to walk on the stormy sea?
Or also to the disciples who must have looked on, unable to believe?
That Peter would step out of the boat and try what he had seen Christ do.
That he would actually try and walk on water because Christ told him to!
For surely Peter must have known that walking on the stormy sea was
impossible.
Why, to risk one’s life for something so foolish, was totally irresponsible.
Yet Peter saw the Lord and he believed on Him and therefore he tried.
While the others merely stayed in the boat, where all were safe and dry.
So was Jesus also talking to the disciples? I’m not sure, that’s not really
clear.
But I know Peter was the only one who had the faith to try, despite his fear.
And when he fell into the dark stormy sea, crying, "Lord, Lord, please save
me."
Jesus was right there by his side, reaching out and pulling him to safety.
And so it is with our lives, in times of dark skies and stormy seas.
With faith and courage we too can go forward, yes, you and me.
We are capable of so much more than we believe for we are the children of
God.
So why do we think that trying to do the impossible seems so unlikely or odd?
With courage and faith we can go forward, yes, even step out of the boat.
Yes, with courage and faith, we too can do what seems so remote.
If we will just believe, you and me.
If we will just believe, Oh God ...in Thee.
